The name turquoise, from the French expression "Pierre
tourques" or "Turkish stone", originated
in the thirteenth century and describes one of the oldest known gemstones.
Turquoise varies in color from greenish blue, through robin's egg-blue, to sky
blue shades and its transparency ranges from translucent to opaque. Turquoise is
said to be a guard against all diseases. It has been thought to warn the wearer
of danger or illness by changing color. In the 13th century,turquoise was
thought to protect the wearer from falling, especially from horses.
The turquoise was seen as a little piece of heaven given to men by the gods, for that reason it was set in precious jewelry by the Aztecs, Incas, Persians, who attributed the blue gem the power to communicate with the celestial forces.
